    Youth:

Our young people need our support and encouragement to ensure they have a future in Ireland

  • arrow_downward
    Senior Citizens:

Our senior citizens deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and be supported in living in their own homes. Accessibility for all, including our senior citizens in all public buildings, streets and shopping areas in our country.

  • arrow_downward
    Crime:

Zero tolerance for crime. The criminal justice system has to be reviewed and changed as, in my opinion, it errs on the side of the criminal not the victim.
More permanent Garda resources are needed especially in border counties.

  • arrow_downward
    Social Housing:

We have 58 acres of land across Louth owned by the local authority. Central Government funding is required to develop this land to build houses to alleviate the huge shortage of social housing across our county.

  • arrow_downward
    Enterprise & Employment:

We must develop the right environment to foster and support the establishment and growth of small indigenous businesses to promote job creation.

  • arrow_downward
    Childcare:

Is a major issue for parents particularly where both parents are out working. Childcare costs should be fair and reasonable for all.

  • arrow_downward
    Education:

We should have affordable education for all irrespective of socio-economic background.

    Healthcare:

Our healthcare system is in crisis. We have to evaluate what we want as a society.

This is a family fun event with children's workshops, tall ships, fly boarding, sand zone, artisan food village promoting local foods and much more - Gerry said we should all 'Be an Ambassador' for Drogheda and encourage family and friends to attend this hugely popular event - for further details check out maritimefestival.ie

Louth IFA

 Louth IFA
01/12/2015 - Louth IFA

I attended the public meeting organised by Louth IFA in Ballymac on the 1st December 2015 in relation to Crime in Louth. Matthew McGreehan, Chair, Louth IFA welcomed us all to the meeting and outlined the issues facing all the people of Louth - senior citizens living in fear, livestock thefts where breeding lines built up over decades can be wiped out in a night, theft of cars, jeeps, trailers, the effect of Tourism in the area as people are afraid to visit, insufficient Garda resources, and the need to reform the criminal justice system. Dermot O'Sullivan, New Chief Superintendent agreed that garda resources is an issue and we need to work together to combat criminality. Inspectors Gerry Curley, Brian Mohan and Crime Prevention Officer for Louth, Vincent Jackson were also in attendance. They are working with the IFA and the PSNI in a constructive and co-ordinated approach to the theft of Livestock. Kevin from Cooley Community Alert Group said they had made submissions to the Department of Justice as far back as April 2010 and had met Asstistant Commissioners and Department officials since then but nothing has improved. Gerard from IFA said they been working on a number of initatives like Theft Stop and Reward on Crimestoppers re cattle theft, other contributions included chipping of cattle instead of tags and passports, better co-ordination of community alert text groups across the County, better collaboration between PSNI and Gardaí resulting in convictions of criminals both sides of the border, no free legal aid to be granted to repeat offenders and action and ownership on behalf of the Government - another meeting will be organised in the coming months and the public are being asked to make suggestions as to how we can deal with and resolve Crime in Louth - Now is the time to Save our Communities - I will keep ye posted on updates - Maeve

Start Your Own Business Training

Start Your Own Business Training – Ardee Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 7:00pm - 10:00pm Ardee Business Park & Training Centre Ardee, Co. Louth.
The Start Your Own Business Programme has been designed to address the needs of those wishing to start their own business, or those who have recently started trading.

Aim: It is aimed at providing practical support, advice and guidance in a broad range of business areas.
This will enable participants to gain a working knowledge of how to set up a business and / or to manage an existing business.

Community Finance Ireland

Community Finance Ireland

I was invited to Ardee to the relaunch of Community Finance Ireland - Community Finance Ireland was established in response to decreasing grant support from government and to help community organisations access commercial loan facilities. It now stands as a key provider of loan finance to the social economy sector in Ireland. It is a registered charity and all profits are recycled into the community and social economy sector. They help community organisations, social enterprises and charities throughout Ireland and have competitive interest rates, lending terms and repayments and dedicated personal account managers.
For further information check out Community Finance Ireland or Tel 041 6858637

Public Participation Network

Public Participation Network

Another very busy week as a Louth County Councillor - attended information session on Public Participation Network (PPN). The role of the PPN is to support Community Groups to participate in decision making and get their voices heard - contrary to some opinions voiced the other night Councillors will have nothing to do with the setting up or running of the PPN in Louth - Further Information and registration forms are available on Louthppn.ie website. I would encourage all community groups in Louth to register for PPN and make a difference for the betterment of our County.

ISPCC Launch on Anti-Bullying

ISPCC Launch on Anti-Bullying

One Year on, as an Independent Councillor for Louth, and as I reflect on what has been the quickest year of my life I want to share with ye how I got on....... I attended and followed up events across the County stayed for the whole event (not just for press photos !) like the ISPCC Launch on Anti-Bullying Initiative in Drogheda where they asked us to help promote their scheme. I wrote to schools across Louth re same to encourage participation as bullying, especially cyber-bullying, is a huge issue for our young people. Also the School Completion Programmes across Louth encourage young people to stay in schools and complete their education and funding has been cut over the last 5 years. I wrote to all relevant Ministers, Taoiseach, Media outlets etc., asking for no more cuts to this vital programme for vulnerable young people and support to continue this programme. I have raised motions in Chamber in relation to accessibility, value for money and other relevant issues for all. I have completed three walkabouts; two in Dlk and one in Drogheda with Council engineers to highlight issues. I have voted and abstained on issues with my conscience and my morals not by "political party pacts" only last week at Dundalk Municipal AGM, I asked if anyone willing to be Cathaoirleach (Chair) and do it for receipted expenses rather than take the additional 12 thousand euro, no one was willing ! That speaks volumes to me, I, as an Independent Councillor, will never get the opportunity to represent my Town or County with pride as Cathaoirleach because of these pacts - Greed and sense of entitlement is alive and well in all political parties in Louth. We have had County Development Plan 2015-2021 Workshops over the past few months; I have attended all bar one (due to a family bereavement) and raised and argued on issues people have asked me to - there are 29 Councillors in Louth and on average 15 attended these workshops which decide the future of our County for the next 5 years - some Councillors attended none at all ?!? We had our special meeting to vote on same last night and one FG Councillor challenged the reasons I was proposing delisting of some homes. I replied that if they had attended the workshops they would know the reasons - I am happy to report that any submissions I was asked to support I did so to the best of my ability. In conclusion it has been a very busy, eye-opening, informative year - roll on 2016 ........
